Notes

  1. In a small saucepan, melt 2 tablespoons of the softened salted butter over medium heat. Add the flour and whisk together until smooth.
  2. Gradually pour in the milk while whisking continuously to avoid lumps. Cook for a few minutes until the mixture thickens and becomes creamy.
  3. Remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in the shredded Gruyère cheese until melted. Season with salt, pepper, and nutmeg. Set the cheese sauce aside.
  4. Preheat your broiler to high.
  5. Place the lightly toasted bread slices on a baking sheet. Spread each slice with Dijon mustard.
  6. Top two of the bread slices with a slice of Black Forest ham, dividing it evenly.
  7. Spoon the cheese sauce over the ham, again dividing it evenly.
  8. Place the remaining two slices of bread on top to create sandwiches.
  9. In a skillet over medium heat, melt the remaining 2 tablespoons of softened salted butter.

  11. Place the sandwiches in the skillet and cook for 2-3 minutes per side until golden brown.
  12. Transfer the sandwiches back to the baking sheet and place under the broiler for 1-2 minutes to allow the cheese to bubble and brown slightly.
