Double Chocolate Cake

This recipe is for a delicious chocolate cake that is easy to make. To start, preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9-inch (23-cm) square cake pan. Melt shortening and chocolate together over low heat and combine with sugar and egg in a mixing bowl. Sift flour, baking soda, and salt together and add to the sugar mixture alternately with buttermilk or soured milk and vanilla. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for about 35 minutes. Cool in the pan before icing with creamy chocolate icing.

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp Shortening - 30 ml
  • 2 oz Unsweetened Chocolate (2 Squares) - 60 g
  • 1 cup Sugar - 250 ml
  • 1 egg - 1
  • 1 1/2 cups Sifted All - Purpose Flour - 375 ml
  • 1 tsp Baking Soda - 5 ml
  • 1/4 tsp Salt - 1 ml
  • 1 cup Buttermilk or Soured Milk - 250 ml
  • 1 cup Vanilla
  • Creamy Chocolate Icing (Recipe Follows)

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9-inch (23-cm) square cake pan.
    Assemble your ingredients and begin by melting the shortening and chocolate together in a small saucepan over low heat. Be sure to keep a close eye on the mixture to avoid scorching.
    In a mixing bowl, combine the melted chocolate mixture with sugar and egg, and beat well to create a smooth, velvety texture.
    Next, sift the flour, baking soda, and salt together and add to the sugar mixture alternately with the buttermilk or soured milk and vanilla. This will help ensure a light and airy texture for your cake.
    Pour the batter into your prepared cake pan and bake for approximately 35 minutes, or until the top of the cake springs back when lightly touched in the center.
